Calgary freedom protests dwindle this weekend as demonstrators comply with injunction

It was another weekend and another round of protests in the downtown core, although the size of the demonstrations diminished.

It looks like the weekly freedom protests that have caused a headache for residents in the Beltline have started to wind down.

Protesters gathered for another weekend to protest COVID-19 mandates Saturday afternoon, although in a much smaller group than previous weekends.

About 300 people gathered at Harley Hotchkiss Park Saturday to protest vaccine mandates and other pandemic health measures.

Calgary police say demonstrators gathered at three different locations on Saturday and at peak times hundreds of people gathered compared to thousands in previous weeks.

The protests remained mostly peaceful with only two arrests being made — one on outstanding warrants, and another for excessive noise. Around 25 tickets were issued, said police.

The group of demonstrators, and a smaller one that gathered at Prince’s Island Park, later moved on to city hall before eventually dispersing.

Last weekend, a group of about 1,000 people converged at Central Memorial Park in the Beltline before moving on to city hall, resulting in the arrest of several demonstrators.

Officers say no injuries or property damage occurred during any of this weekend’s protests.
