Calgary crash leaves woman dead after she fell out of SUV

A woman is dead and a man is seriously hurt after a serious crash in Calgary’s downtown on Tuesday.

Police say they were called to the area of 3 Street SW and 7 Avenue SW around 3:50 p.m. for reports of a single-vehicle collision.

Officers initially thought the SUV hit the woman, but the investigation determined the woman fell out of the vehicle as it was moving.

Police say a black Kia Soul driven by a 26-year-old man was stopped at a red light with a woman in the passenger seat. The Kia suddenly reversed and hit a parked car on the side of the road. The sudden movement caused the woman to fall out of the passenger side door. She was then run over and trapped under the SUV.

Nobody was inside the parked car.

Although bystanders rushed over to help the woman who was run over, police say she was severely injured and died a short time later in hospital.

The driver of the Kia was found unconscious in the vehicle and was taken to hospital where he remains in serious condition.

Police say while alcohol and speed are not considered factors in the crash, they’re looking into whether the driver was impaired by drugs.
