Evacuation issued for Edson as wildfire burns out of control

An evacuation order has been issued for the Town of Edson with a nearby wildfire raging out of control.
The issued evacuation route asks locals to head to Hinton or Jasper on Highway 16, as Highways 22, 32, and 40 are all closed.

The Town of Edson detailed the evacuation zone boundaries in a release on its website.
“Western boundary of evacuation zone is Marlboro and Range Road 200 all the way to the East of Yellowhead County. Northern boundary is Township Road 550 and southern is Township Road 520,” it said.

The Town of Edson adds it will provide evacuation via bus to all those without transportation of their own.
“Evacuate immediately. For those with no transportation or require bussing go to Glenwood Park, Holy Redeemer High, Westhaven School, Griffith Park Parking Lot, Mary Bergeron School, Hillendale Park,” it said in a release.

With other evacuation orders issued elsewhere in Alberta, people fleeing Edson will bring the total number of those evacuated to over 20,000.
As of Friday night, 92 wildfires were active in the province with 31 being out of control.
