Calgary crews battle a pair of brush fires Monday

Calgary fire crews were called out to a pair of brush fires in the city on Monday afternoon.

The fire department responded to a fire just before 7 p.m. east of Inglewood near Harvie Passage and Pearce Estate Park.

CPS officers were busy evacuating the area while crews worked to contain the fire.

No word yet on the extent of damages or a cause.

A brush fire earlier in the Sunnyside neighbourhood of Calgary also had to be brought under control, the fire department says.

Carol Henke with the Calgary Fire Department says crews started receiving calls about the fire around 2:30 p.m. Monday.

“There were some thoughts that it was threatening some homes so we do have a lot of apparatus in the area,” she told CityNews around 3:30 p.m.

In an update, Henke says crews were able to get a handle on the situation and managed to keep flames away from any homes. No injuries have been reported.

Footage posted online shows thick smoke rising from a forested area between buildings and homes.

The cause of that fire is not yet clear. However, in a statement later in the day, the fire department says they believe the fire may be related to improper disposal of smoking material.

They add, another contributing factor to the rapid spread of the fire is the poplar fluff that is currently blowing around in our green spaces.
