Calgary police officer who slammed handcuffed woman to the ground in 2017 fired

Years after assaulting a woman while on duty, a Calgary police officer has been fired.

In a disturbing video from 2017, Alexander Dunn can be seen brutally choke-slamming a 26-year-old Black woman, who was in handcuffs.

The officer was fired during a disciplinary hearing Thursday as he was found guilty of two counts of discreditable conduct under Alberta’s Police Act.

At the time of the assault, his victim, Dalia Kafi, was handcuffed, and being processed for minor charges when she pulled away from Dunn, who was trying to remove her scarf.

Kafi was violently slammed onto the ground, and suffered a broken nose and a split lip, requiring surgery and stitches.

Dunn served a 30-day conditional sentence for assault causing bodily harm.

He was a member of the Calgary Police Service for 14 years and docked four days pay in 2016 for accessing civilian information for personal reasons, and storing his service gun at home.

Dunn was also investigated after images of him dressed in Blackface during a 2012 Halloween party surfaced online

His dismissal doesn’t come into effect until after the appeal period and, until then, Dunn remains suspended without pay.
