Calgary SE fire destroys home and sends 4 to hospital

A fire destroyed a home in southeast Calgary, and the residents have been rushed to hospital Sunday.

The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) says crews responded to reports of a structure fire at around 8 a.m. at a rural property south of Highway 22 X and east of 88 Street.

Firefighters found a single-family acreage with an attached garage upon arrival.

The CFD says crews worked to put out the blaze, saying it only affected one structure.

Four people self-evacuated before the fire department arrived. Firefighters say three of them were taken to hospital for minor smoke inhalation, while one man was taken to hospital with serious burns.

They add all of them have been displaced.

In the meantime, crews and a fire investigator will remain on the scene to ensure there is no extension of the fire and ensure it’s put out.

The blaze’s cause is unknown and is being investigated at this time.

“The Calgary Fire Department would like to remind all citizens of the importance of working smoke alarms and ensuring that all occupants have an escape plan in the event of a fire or emergency,” a news release reads.
