Calgary gas prices surging with tax increases coming next week

Gas prices are on the rise in Calgary with the average price up more than six cents in just a couple of days.

The average retail price was sitting at just over $1.52/litre on Tuesday afternoon, according to GasBuddy.

The number presents a stark rise from just two days earlier when the average price was close to $145.7/litre.

According to the site, the priciest fill-up in the city is just shy of $1.60/litre — 11 cents higher than the most expensive station on Monday.

The cheapest price is sitting at just under $1.37 as of late Tuesday.

The average price to fill-up in Calgary bottomed out around the end of 2023 and has seen a gradual rise of approximately 36 cents since. The average retail price in the city on New Year’s Day was $1.14/litre.

Data from the GasBuddy suggests prices haven’t been this high in the city since the fall of 2022.

The recent surge is likely just a sign of things to come with Ottawa set to increase the federal carbon tax and Alberta raising the gas tax on Apr. 1, along with typically higher prices in the summer months due to increased demand.

The carbon price increase at the start of next month will mean a surge of 17 cents per litre on gasoline, and 21 cents per litre on diesel.

At the same time, the provincial government is bringing back the 13 cent per litre gas tax.
