With the beginning of spring just weeks away, Calgarians might notice some more wildlife of a certain feline variety making their presence known. While they may seem intimidating, one expert says not to be alarmed if one shows up in your backyard.
This time of year typically sees an increased number of bobcat sightings reported to 311.
Harry Aime, wildlife technician with Calgary Parks and Open Spaces, says the animals are quite common in Calgary, and can be seen almost anywhere, but tend to gravitate towards more open green spaces and parks.
While they have been known to prey on unaccompanied small pets, Aime says they actually make pretty good neighbours.
“They’re very good at living amongst us, usually without causing any issues,” he said. “They’re very intelligent, adaptable creatures.
“[But] it’s really important for residents of Calgary to keep their pets indoors and if they are letting their smaller dogs out, to keep an eye on them.”
He says mama bobcats with kittens might be a little more territorial, but generally, bobcats aren’t aggressive or dangerous. But, Calgarians need to do their part in preventing wildlife encounters.
“It’s really important for us to keep any kind of attractants or anything in the yard, secure and cleaned up; even any kind of vegetation that could serve as a sort of cover for them can be pretty appealing to them, so to keep your yard kind of orderly,” Aime said.
Calgarians who see a bobcat in their backyard are advised to make sure it has a clear exit path.
“Just make sure you leave them an avenue of escape, a way that they can get away,” Aime explained. “Just make sure you don’t corner them or make them feel threatened and they’ll leave on their own time, typically.”
