Slush Cup 2025 returns to Banff’s Sunshine Village

Slush Cup returns to Banff's Sunshine Village on wrapping up the winter season, on May 19, promising to be bigger and better than ever.

Winter’s going out with a splash at Banff Sunshine Village with this weekend’s Slush Cup.

One hundred competitors will be dressing up in all sorts of wild outfits to ski down a hill and try to make it across a 110-foot long pool of snowy cold water.

Kendra Scurfield with Banff Sunshine says the event is legendary.

It was started by two long-time Banff residents 97 years ago.

“Back in 1928, they were enjoying some spring skiing up at Sunshine Village and rumour has it they skied down a waterfall or creek, one dared the other and probably said ‘Hey, hold my beer,’ and over the years it has turned into a three-day festival,” Scurfield explained.

This weekend marks the 95th annual event, because a few years were lost during the pandemic.

The three-day festival starts Saturday with a 70s disco theme.

Winners ski away with a $1,000 cash prize, a 2025/26 Banff Sunshine Village Season Pass, and bragging rights for the honoring title of, “Mr. Slush Cup,” and “Mrs. Slush Cup.”

Scurfield says competitors can register the day of Monday’s event, but they have to dress up.

“This year’s theme is kind of disco angels, 70s vibes, think fallen angles. We want to see creativity with a costume,” she said. “Last year, Mrs. Slush Cup was dressed as a giant disco ball, and Mr. Slush Cup was a penguin complete with and umbrella.”

There will be entertainment from DJ Joanna Magic and Calgary-based Kate and the Comets.
