AHS issues measles exposure warning for all of Alberta’s south zone

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is out with a new warning when it comes to the measles outbreak in the province.
The health agency says it is now believed there has been an under-reporting of cases in the past, warning of potential widespread exposure across all communities in Alberta’s southern zone.
Effective immediately, AHS is issuing an exposure advisory for the entire south zone, saying previous site specific exposure advisories no longer capture the scope of the outbreak.
Anyone who lives in the South Zone, which includes the city’s of Lethbridge and Medicine Hat, are asked to be aware of the ongoing measles risk and ensure immunizations are up to date.
Alberta reported 22 new cases on Friday, 19 of which are in the South Zone. The province has seen more than 500 cases of measles since early March.
Government data shows close to 80 per cent of Alberta’s total cases have been reported in children.
Measles symptoms include fever, coughing, runny nose, red eyes and a blotchy, red rash that appears three to seven days after the fever starts.
