Executive director of Run Calgary and the marathon, Kirsten Fleming, says participation is up 23 per cent over last year, breaking a more than decade-long record.

“Running is booming and we are absolutely here for it,” she said.

The event is moving to a new era this year, expanding from a single-day of activities to a two-day occasion.

Fleming says there’s an event for everyone wanting to get involved in the sport.

Saturday, May 24 will play host to the 5K, 10K, a kids race, and the diaper dash, while Sunday the 25th will see runners take part in the marathon and half-marathon.

“It’s come a long way since the first year back in 1963 when only 19 men line up at the start line,” said Fleming. “Now, it’s all ages, all abilities, and people in different levels of their journey.”

She adds the youngest registered participant is a nine-month-old in the diaper dash, and the oldest is Gerry Miller, who’s in his 80s and running the 10K on Saturday.

Road closures

There will be several road closures and detours around the city to accommodate for this weekend’s events.
