The city says a new athletic complex in northeast Calgary is one step closer to reality following the finalization of a land agreement.
The news came Wednesday, saying Calgary has inked a deal with Triovest for the future site of the Northeast Athletic Complex.
Located at the northwest corner of 80 Avenue NE and Metis Trail NE in the community of Saddle Ridge, the facility is expected to include a natural turf cricket field, four competition-sized multi-use artificial turf fields, an indoor fieldhouse, and other amenities like pathways, green spaces, covered spectator areas, parking, and a playground.
“Investments like the Northeast Athletic Complex are how we build a stronger Calgary. By creating high-quality spaces, we enable athletes and community groups to come together, stay active, and thrive. With more families choosing to call this area home, the complex will deliver the space and amenities our growing communities deserve,” said Mayor Jyoti Gondek.
Council’s GamePLAN Making Waves aims to increase bookable hours at indoor fields and athletic parks by two-and-a-half times. The city says the construction of this new athletic facility will contribute to rising demand.
The goal of the plan is to have 89 artificial turf fields and 13 fieldhouse by 2050.
“This project is an important step toward making it easier for everyone to stay active and connect as a community,” added Ward 5 Coun. Raj Dhaliwal.
Billed as a premier event-hosting venue, the Northeast Athletic Complex will elevate Calgary’s profile as a top-tier destination for major sporting events and events, the city says.
Public engagement was done last year to gather feedback on potential designs and amenities.
