2 Calgary transit bus drivers among those assaulted in random NE attack

Calgary police say 3 people were injured following an assault in the city’s NE.

At least three people, including two Calgary Transit bus drivers, were taken to hospital after being assaulted by a drunk man in a northeast Calgary bus loop Thursday morning.

Calgary police say it happened around 10:45 a.m. at the bus loop located near the intersection of Centre Street North and 78 Avenue NE.

Officers were called to the area following reports a man, who appeared to be intoxicated, had assaulted several people.

Investigators say at this time, there were three victims, all of which sustained minor injuries.

Two of the victims were Calgary Transit drivers, according to police, who were standing outside of their vehicles in the bus loop at the time.

There was no weapon used in the assaults, police say.

A short time later, officers arrested the man.

There is no risk to the public.

Council increases protections for transit drivers

The safety of Calgary Transit bus operators has seen renewed interest following a violent attack on a driver in the northeast last month.

The driver was attacked by two men he didn’t know after he refused their request to deviate from the regular bus route.

He was left with significant injuries and taken to hospital in life-threatening condition. The driver was eventually upgraded to stable condition.

Two people are facing charges in that attack.

City councillors approved a $15-million ask to equip city buses with enhanced security shields.
