AHS warns of potential measles exposure at Calgary medical centre and brewery

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is warning Calgarians of potential measles exposure at a local brewery in Mission and a northwest medical centre.

The health agency said an individual with measles visited the South Block Barbeques & Brewing Co. at 24 Avenue and 4 Street SW on July 21 while infectious from 1-4 p.m.

Then, AHS says the individual visited the Pinnacle Medical Centres Crowfoot at 31 Crowfoot Way NW two days later, on July 23, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Officials say more locations could be shared with the public if necessary.

Thirty-six cases were added to the province’s total on Monday, making it 1,574 cases in the province. Seventeen are from the North zone, 14 are from the South Zone, and five are from Calgary.

Anyone who has been at those locations, was born in or after 1970 and has less than two documented doses of measles-containing vaccine may be at risk for developing measles.

AHS is asking them to self-monitor for symptoms of measles and strongly encourages them to review their immunization records.

This comes after the agency began limiting visitors to provincial cancer facilities to protect vulnerable hospitalized patients during the measles outbreak.

Measles can include complications ranging from ear infections to pneumonia, swelling of the brain and in rare cases, death.

Symptoms of measles include:

• Fever of 38.3° C or higher;
• Cough, runny nose and/or red eyes; and
• A rash that appears three to seven days after fever starts, usually beginning behind the ears and on the face and spreading down to the body and then to the arms and legs. The rash appears red and blotchy on lighter skin colours. On darker skin colours, it can appear purple or darker than the skin around it, or it might be hard to see.

If measles symptoms happen to develop, AHS says to stay home and call the measles hotline at 1-844-944-3434 before visiting any healthcare facility or provider, including a family physician clinic or pharmacy.
