Calgary Zoo takes in rescued cubs after grizzly bear killed in self-defense

The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo has taken in two rescued grizzly cubs after their mother was killed during an interaction with a human south of Calgary.

According to Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services (FWES), a hunter was near Diamond Valley on Sept. 15 and acted in self-defense, shooting and killing a grizzly bear to prevent an attack.

FWES officers responded to the report and later confirmed that the adult female bear had two cubs.

Officers successfully captured the cubs, and they have since been transported to the Calgary Zoo, where they are receiving care.

“The cubs were born this year and are still fully dependent on their mom,” reads a social media post from the zoo. “Without human intervention, they surely would have died if left in the wild.”

FWES continues to monitor the situation and reminds the public to report any wildlife-related incidents to authorities.
