A significant weather system is making its way off the Rocky Mountains, bringing a dramatic shift to southern Alberta’s forecast.
660 NewsRadio Meteorologist Kevin Stanfield warns that the region should brace for a wet and chilly weekend, with a snowfall warning now in effect for Banff and Kananaskis.
“Through Saturday and into Sunday, we start off with rain showers,” Stanfield said, noting that the precipitation will transition into snow by Saturday night.
While snowfall amounts will vary across the region, the bigger concern may be the sharp temperature drop—about 13 degrees between Saturday and Sunday—which could create hazardous conditions on roads and sidewalks.
Environment Canada says five to 20 centimetres of snow is expected across the Rockies and Foothills, with townsites getting lower amounts. Calgary will see a mix of rain and snow.
Despite the weekend chill, forecasters are not sounding the alarm for a harsh winter ahead. Environment Canada meteorologist Natalie Hasell says the seasonal outlook suggests a milder-than-average trend for the coming months.
“Our seasonal forecast has decent signals for above normal temperatures for the months of October, November, and December,” Hasell explained.
Calgary’s average daytime high in November typically sits at 4.1 C, and in December, around 0.4 C. This year, temperatures are expected to be somewhat warmer than the norm.
As for precipitation, a developing La Niña event is expected to have only a weak influence on the region.
“It doesn’t mean you won’t get precipitation—you will,” Hasell said. “But how much has an equal chance. It could go either way.”
Calgary residents may still be basking in the warmth of September, which was the city’s second warmest on record. The average high last month was 15.6 C, just shy of the 1938 record of 16 C.
