Unique ways Calgary organizations are raising Movember funds

It’s the start of November, which means Movember is in full swing. Micah Quintin spoke with several local businesses about the unique ways they’re raising funds for men’s mental health and those battling cancer.

Push-ups for a cause: a Calgary store is raising funds for Movember by encouraging people to stay active.

“One way that we can raise funds is you can buy a push up challenge, which is essentially $10. The ticket allows you to enter, you do as many push ups as you can. We’ll add it to a big white board and then the number one person gets a bunch of rewards as well,” said Pablo Correa, who works for Supplement King. “Last year it was a meal prep bag with a Movember logo all over it. So, some pretty cool stuff there.”

The annual Movember fundraiser raises awareness and funds for men’s health issues, including mental health, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer.

Correa says the business is looking to raise $100,000 for the Movember campaign, adding that the initiative hits close to home for him and his friends.

“I have a lot of male friends and some of them deal with mental health struggles,” he said. “So just making sure that we’re creating a community that can help give a voice to people and give the funding if people need to use some resources out there.

Meanwhile, over at Best of Sevens Barbers, the facility is offering mustache and beard shaves to customers in support of Movember.

“Every shave that comes in, we’re donating $5 from that shave directly to the Movember Foundation,” said marketing manager Tyra Macdonald. “Then we also have MO Maintenance Mondays, which means every Monday we’re going to have free mustache trims and shape ups for the entire month.”

Since 2003, the Movember Foundation has raised $1.7 billion for men’s health causes.
