Man charged after brazen carjacking, crash in SE Calgary

A man is facing multiple charges after a brazen carjacking in southeast Calgary on Sunday evening that ended with a crash and a confrontation with responding firefighters.

At around 5:30 p.m., a man was dropping off his granddaughter in the community of Walden while his wife remained in the back seat of their vehicle.

Moments later, police say a suspect wearing a ski mask jumped into the car. The woman managed to escape as the vehicle sped off, narrowly missing the grandfather.

Just 15 minutes later, at 5:45 p.m., Calgary Fire Department crews were dispatched to a vehicle that had struck a power pole near Shawville Road and Shawville Blvd. SE. Police later confirmed it was the same vehicle stolen in Walden.

When firefighters arrived, the driver allegedly rammed their truck several times. In response, the fire crew pinned the vehicle against the pole and called police.

Officers arrived shortly after and took the suspect into custody.

“This was an incredibly dangerous situation and we’re relieved the family wasn’t hurt,” said Staff Sgt. Chiran Cardona in a statement. “We also appreciate the assistance of the Calgary Fire Department in resolving the incident.”

Police have identified the accused as Skylar Beaverbones, 23, of Calgary. He faces nine charges, including forcible confinement, assault with a weapon, dangerous operation of a vehicle, assault against a peace officer, failure to comply with a release order, disguise with intent, obstructing a peace officer, and two counts of mischief.

Beaverbones is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 9.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call 403-266-1234 or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
