Travel experts share advice for passengers on vacation as Air Transat strike looms

By Daniel Johnson, The Canadian Press

With Air Transat moving to cancel flights and bring people back from vacation early ahead of a strike deadline, one travel expert says there are some best practices for passengers to avoid getting stuck abroad.

Barry Choi, who runs the Money We Have personal finance and travel website, says he recommends continuously monitoring what the airline is saying regarding the impact of the strike through their website or other channels.

One option to give travellers peace of mind that they won’t be stranded is to book a fully refundable flight as a backup, he says.

Choi says he also recommends having travel insurance and being aware of what is covered under the policy.

Air Transat has begun to cancel flights as the clock ticks down on a Wednesday morning strike deadline from pilots near the peak of the holiday travel period.

On Monday, Air Transat arranged four extra flights to ferry some passengers back early from their vacations in Cancun, Punta Cana and Cuba.
