Driver caught at 178 km/h with unbelted kids in back seat: RCMP

Alberta RCMP are out with a warning after a driver was clocked going 178km per hour on the QE II North of Airdrie on Sunday.

A driver was caught travelling at a “dangerous and unacceptable” speed on a highway north of Calgary over the weekend with two unbelted children in the back seat, according to police.

RCMP say an officer clocked a vehicle going 178 km/h on Highway 2 north of Airdrie on Sunday morning.

After pulling the speeding vehicle over, the officer allegedly noticed children in the back who were not wearing seatbelts.

The driver received three summonses and is scheduled to appear in court in March.

Police called the combination of extreme speed and unrestrained children dangerous, warning that both factors dramatically increase the risk of serious injury or death.

So far in 2026, RCMP have responded to 19 fatal collisions resulting in 21 deaths across the province.
