The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo has euthanized a female wild boar named Fern, following a period of declining health.
In an update shared on its website, the zoo said the euthanasia took place last month and was made as a “compassionate decision” focused on the animal’s welfare.
Officials said a necropsy revealed several degenerative conditions consistent with advanced age, including severe osteoarthritis, significant tooth wear and loss, declining kidney function, and cystic changes in Fern’s uterus.
Fern lived to nearly 13 years old — just weeks shy of her birthday. The zoo noted the median life expectancy for wild boar in human care is typically between 12 and 14 years.
“Throughout her time with us, Fern was a familiar and much-loved presence. Many guests enjoyed watching her wallow and observe her natural behaviours, and she held a special place with those who cared for her day to day,” the zoo said.
They add Fern will be deeply missed by her dedicated care team and the broader zoo community.
As the last remaining wild boar in the zoo’s care, officials added that “Fern’s habitat is currently vacant and they are thoughtfully considering its future.”
