Two children found dead in car outside Calgary police station; man in custody

Calgary police received a call regarding a suspicious vehicle and discovered the bodies of two children. One man is in custody. Joel Mendelson reports.

A man is in custody after two children were found dead in the back of a car just steps from a police station in northwest Calgary.

Calgary police were called to 14 Street NW just north of John Laurie Blvd around 10 a.m. Thursday, after receiving a tip about a vehicle across the street from their District 3 station.

Emergency crews arrived to find two children under the age of 10 in the back of the parked vehicle. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, and their deaths are considered suspicious.

One male was taken into custody. Police could not confirm whether that person was ever inside the vehicle, but said he was near it when officers arrived.

“It was very shocking,” said CPS Duty Insp. Darren Smith. “I can’t tell you the nature of how the call came in…but we did receive a call that let us know it was outside the 3 district office.”

“This is heartbreaking for everyone.”

Investigators have yet to confirm the identities of the two children and say they do not know the relationship between them and the man in custody.

“We still need to identify who the children are, and at that point we can then start to look at who their parents are, who is responsible, what actually happened,” says Smith.

The homicide unit has taken over the investigation. The medical examiner is also on scene to determine the cause of death.

Police say there is no threat to public safety.
