One man is dead while another is in hospital after a shooting at a grocery store parking lot in northeast Calgary that police are calling “brazen.” Edward Djan has more.

A man is dead, and another is fighting for his life in hospital after a shooting in the parking lot of a northeast Calgary grocery store on Monday night.

Emergency crews were called to the parking lot of the North Hill Co-op on 16 Avenue NE around 7:50 p.m. for reports of shots fired.

When officers arrived, they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, and one of the men has since died.

Police said the suspects fled the area before officers arrived, and no arrests have been made.

Investigators believe the shooting was targeted and say there is no ongoing risk to the public.

The grocery store was placed into lockdown as a precaution to protect staff and customers. Police later confirmed the lockdown was lifted.

Police are asking the public to avoid the area while the investigation continues.

“We fully recognize the impact of brazen, violent acts on the larger community,” CPS Duty Insp. Darren Smith said in a statement. “Public safety is our number one priority, and Calgarians deserve to feel safe at all times in their communities.”

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting, or who may have dashcam or CCTV footage from the area around the time of the incident, to contact Calgary police at 403‑266‑1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
