A wildfire northwest of Calgary in Clearwater County, which was raging out of control over the May long weekend, is now being held.
The county reported an emergency alert on Thursday for the blaze five kilometres north of the James Wilson provincial recreation area, near Highway 40 and Highway 584.
Being held means the wildfire is not expected to grow beyond its current boundaries, given existing weather conditions and available resources.
The evacuation alert is also lifted, and officials say it’s safe to “resume normal activities” even though the fire is still burning.
However, Clearwater County says its state of emergency remains in place to support resources.
Meanwhile, a fire ban in Rocky View County has been downgraded to an advisory for east and west Rocky View County.
The current conditions now pose a moderate fire risk. Fire permits will not be issued for any fires, and any existing permits remain suspended.
