Electrical fire leaves Calgary Bankview residents without power

Dramatic footage showing how some residents in Calgary’s SW woke up to flames and exploding sounds after a transformer fire knocked out power. Henna Saeed reports.

An electrical fire has led to a power outage for over 80 residents in the Bankview area in southwest Calgary on Wednesday.

Calgary firefighters responded to the outdoor blaze at around 5:50 a.m. on the 2500 block of 17 A Street SW.

“Crews arrived to an electrical fire of a transformer on a power pole,” CFD information officer Alex Kwan said.

He adds Enmax was called to support and ensure the power was shut off for firefighters to extinguish the fire.

A post on Reddit shows large plumes of black smoke coming from a home, and fire flickering and spitting into the air.

While residents were expected to be without power until around 11 a.m., that has changed to 4 p.m.
