As many as 200 employees of a Canada Post mail sorting facility in Calgary’s Sunridge neighbourhood were evacuated Friday morning due to a possible gas leak.
Battalion Chief Scott Cowan says Calgary Fire Department crews responded to the building on Sunridge Boulevard after calls reported the smell of gas inside.
When crews arrived, no reading was registered on the gas metre.
“But your nose will normally pick it up before the gas monitor will because our noses are very sensitive to the mercaptan that’s in natural gas,” Cowan explained.
However, it is now believed there is no hazard present.
Early investigations indicate a rooftop heating unit could be responsible for the initial smell.
Everyone has since been allowed to re-enter the building.
