Canada’s longest running marathon returns to Calgary this weekend, and tens of thousands of people are expected to participate.

The Calgary Marathon, sponsored by Servus Credit Union, has been happening annually since 1963, when 19 men lined up at Glenmore Stadium, with the exception of 2020.

2026’s event will be the 62nd marathon.

Participants are registered in six different events.

The shortest of which is the diaper dash, followed by the kids’ race, a five-kilometre race, a 10-kilometre race. All of those events are happening on Saturday.

Sunday will see runners participate in the 21.1 kilometre half marathon, and the full 42.2 kilometre marathon.

Organizers say the aim is to offer a race for every age and ability.

Road closures

There will be several road closures and detours around the city to accommodate for this weekend’s events.

Road closures begin at 4:45 AM on Saturday and Sunday.

Temporary parking signs are set to begin appearing up to 12 hours ahead of time.

Participants are encouraged to allow ample time to make it to the start area of the race.
