Company fined $350K after Calgary worker killed in forklift incident

A materials supply company has been fined hundreds of thousands of dollars after a worker died at a Calgary warehouse more than two years ago.

LX Hausys Canada Inc. pleaded guilty on May 28 to an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) charge, admitting it failed to ensure a worker’s health and safety in connection with a Sept. 19, 2023, incident.

The fatal incident happened as the worker was helping move marble slabs with a forklift when the slabs shifted, hit the worker and fatally injuring him.

LX Hausys must pay $350,000 to the Manufacturers’ Health & Safety Association. The funds will go toward developing portable virtual‑reality forklift simulators to improve operator training, according to the province.

Fourteen additional charges were withdrawn by the Crown.

Both the company and the Crown have 30 days to appeal the conviction or the penalty.
