Mount Royal University site down due to cyber attack

By CityNews Staff

Students at Mount Royal University are being told they still need to attend their scheduled exams as the school deals with a cyber attack.

MRU’s website, telephone services, and other systems remain down as the school continues to deal with a cyber incident that began on Wednesday.

At an alternate site, the university says some of its systems and services were targeted, and once staff realized what was happening, they took immediate steps to contain the threat.

“We have retained external cybersecurity experts to assist with the response and investigation, and we are following our established incident response protocols,” the notice reads.

It’s still unknown if personal information was accessed, but an investigation is now underway.

As of Friday, a public wireless internet network was made available for students and staff.

For anyone using the public WiFi network, MRU says avoid accessing sensitive personal information, such as online banking, while connected, and use a VPN for an extra layer of security.

MRU says law enforcement has been notified.

Meanwhile, officials say the campus is still safe — and fire and alarm systems are still operational.
