Woman fatally shot by police after ‘driving erratically,’ fleeing officers for 24 hours

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating after a dangerous driving suspect died of her injuries after being shot by Calgary police on Sunday.

A woman is dead after she was shot by officers during a police takedown on a Calgary highway on Sunday afternoon.

Police say the incident began after responding to multiple reports of a dangerous driver in the area of Deerfoot Trail and Memorial Drive around 4:15 p.m.

Calgary police inspector Mike Anderson says they believe the suspect was driving erratically inside and outside the city and evading police for up to 24 hours.

“The driver was driving the wrong way on one-way streets, high speed through red lights and was believed to have been involved in multiple collisions,” he told reporters Sunday.

When officers attempted to arrest the driver, Anderson says the situation escalated, and officers opened fire.

“A confrontation occurred, resulting in multiple officers using a variety of use of force tools, including one officer discharging their service firearm,” he said.

The suspect was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries where she later died. No officers were hurt.

Northbound Deerfoot Trail was closed between Memorial and 16 Avenue NE for the investigation, but has since reopened.

Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called in to investigate.
