Environment Canada warning says Calgary to expect 100 mm of rainfall

Calgarians can expect up to 100 milimetres of rain, Environment and Climate Change Canada said in a warning issued for the city Sunday.

The notice says the rain will range from 50 to 100 mm and is expected to continue into Monday before it simmers down in the evening — ending by Tuesday morning.

Meteorologists warn water will likely pool on roads in low-lying areas, and fast-moving currents can sweep vehicles away and damage infrastructure.

“Don’t drive through flooded roadways. Watch for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts,” the notice reads.

Sharing information from the City of Calgary, Mayor Jeromy Farkas says river levels are within normal ranges, but are expected to increase “modestly” early in the week.

“We do not anticipate overbank flooding in communities,” his post reads.

“The scale of this event is currently expected to be similar in size to the event in early June, potentially resulting in wet low-lying areas near the river, some pathway closures at underpasses near the river, and possibly a boating advisory.”

He says crews are on hand if needed, but any additional emergency responses are not expected.

Meanwhile, the forecast for Calgary calls for thunderstorms both on Sunday and Monday, with highs between 15 C and 17 C.
