‘Sweaty, clammy, and pale’: Man in police custody rushed to hospital, ASIRT investigating

ASIRT is now investigating after a man was arrested by Calgary Police and taken to hospital earlier this month.

Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after a man taken into custody in Calgary was brought to hospital in serious condition following his arrest earlier this month.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) says tactical officers responded to a home in the northwest community of Huntington Hills before 5 p.m. on June 17.

Police instructed neighbours to remain inside and repeatedly called on a man to come out of the home, according to ASIRT. The man was subsequently arrested and brought to the CPS arrest processing unit around 5:30 p.m.

According to investigators, an officer noticed the man appeared unwell, describing him as “sweaty, clammy and pale,” and requested medical assistance. Police briefly removed his handcuffs and reapplied them in front of his body.

ASIRT says staff began providing treatment until EMS arrived.

Paramedics rushed the man to Foothills hospital in serious condition before 7 p.m. He remains in hospital in stable condition.

Investigators say no further details are being released as the investigation continues.
