Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo welcomes three red panda cubs

The Wilder Institute's Calgary Zoo is celebrating the birth of three endangered red panda cubs, though visitors will have to wait a little longer to see the newborns.

The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is announcing a new addition after three red panda cubs were born earlier this month.

The zoo says the cubs arrived quietly on June 8 to seven‑year‑old Udaya.

The trio are still too young to be sexed, but staff report they are healthy and receiving close care from Udaya and the Animal Care team.

“Udaya is an experienced, attentive mother,” says the zoo’s animal care manager Patrick Thompson. “It’s been great to see her caring for and bonding with her cubs.”

The cubs will remain off habitat until they grow larger and reach key developmental milestones.

Tho zoo says it’s Udaya’s third litter with her mate Linus, following previous births in 2022 and 2023. Staff say the animals have handled changes in their environment and routine while maintaining stable health and normal behaviour.

Guests will not be able to see the new cubs right away. Linus and the cubs older brother Anshu will be on habitat when Asian Highlands opens on July 15.

“Their new home in Asian Highlands has been designed to reflect how red pandas naturally live in the wild, with complex climbing structures, elevated pathways, and a more natural forested environment,” says Thompson.
