Man dies after RCMP open fire in roadside ‘altercation’ near Irricana

Mounties say a man who died was shot by one of their officers after an “altercation” just outside Irricana northeast of Calgary on Friday.

It happened at around 6:20 p.m., when police received a 911 call on Highway 9 outside the town.

When RCMP arrived, they say a male suspect was found, and an officer shot him with their service weapon during what they are calling an “altercation.” No details on what transpired were provided.

Life-saving measures were administered, they say, but the man was declared dead on scene.

No officers were hurt.

“Independent of ASIRT’s investigation, the RCMP’s internal review process has been implemented to gather a full account of what took place during this incident,” Mounties said in a release.

“RCMP training, policy, police response, and the officer’s duty status will be subject to review. The RCMP is, of course, fully cooperating with ASIRT.”

Mounties say they contacted the Police Review Commission, and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is conducting an independent investigation.
