Woman was lying in road before being hit by car in downtown Calgary

By CityNews Staff

Police say a woman in hospital with serious injuries was lying down in the middle of the road before she was hit by a car in downtown Calgary.

Emergency crews were called to 5 Avenue and Centre Street S around 1:25 a.m. Wednesday for reports of someone being struck by a vehicle.

Calgary police say a man in his 40s was driving a 2015 Toyota Prius V east on 5 Avenue when he drove over a woman who was lying in the road just east of Centre Street.

Investigators say the Toyota driver pulled over right way.

The woman was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. Police are still trying to determine why she was lying in the road.

The driver was not hurt and police do not believe speed, or impairment on part of the driver played a role in the crash.

Roads were closed on 5 Avenue between Centre Street and 1 Street, but reopened at around 5:30 a.m.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
