Calgary company fined after worker dies in 2023 excavation collapse

A Calgary plumbing company has pleaded guilty to failing to protect a worker following a fatal construction incident in 2023.

The case stems from a June 8, 2023 excavation collapse at a water and sewer line worksite in the northwest Calgary community of Charleswood.

A trench caved in and buried a worker who later died. The incident triggered an investigation into whether proper safety measures were in place at the time of the collapse.

Mr. Mike’s Plumbing Ltd. entered the guilty plea on Monday in a Calgary courtroom, according to the province. Ten additional charges were withdrawn.

The court issued a $115,000 fine, including the victim fine surcharge. The judge also imposed a creative sentence requiring the company to pay $215,000 to the Injury Prevention Centre.

The funding will support a province‑wide safety campaign aimed at helping young workers identify hazards, speak up about unsafe conditions, and reduce workplace injuries through education and industry partnerships.

Both Mr. Mike’s Plumbing Ltd. and the Crown have 30 days to appeal the conviction or the penalty.
