Visitors to Jasper National Park are being urged to stay alert as berry season brings increased bear activity throughout the park.
Parks Canada says bears are actively feeding on ripe berries, often in bushes located along hiking trails, roadways and campground areas. Because the animals can become focused on foraging, officials warn that visitors may accidentally surprise them at close range.
To reduce the risk of encounters, Parks Canada recommends making noise while travelling on trails, hiking in tight groups, and slowing down if running or cycling through areas with limited visibility. Visitors are also encouraged to keep bear spray readily accessible and know how to use it.
If you do encounter a bear, Parks Canada advises staying calm, backing away slowly and never running, as sudden movements can trigger a chase response.
Officials say taking these precautions can help keep both visitors and wildlife safe during one of the busiest feeding periods of the year.
