Man seriously injured after tour bus rolls down hill at Alberta’s Columbia Icefield

One man has been badly injured after a tour bus rolled down a hill on the Columbia Icefield.
RCMP say the man was the only one involved and that no one else was on what Pursuit, the company that operates the tours, referred to as a “small tour bus” when the accident occurred around 1 p.m. Tuesday, about 120 kilometres south of Jasper, Alta.
Pursuit runs the tours on the road leading to the Athabasca Glacier at the icefield, which straddles the Alberta-British Columbia boundary.
In a statement, it says a team member was conducting an operational maintenance check and was involved in an incident on the glacier access road at the Columbia Icefield.
Pursuit said the maintenance worker was the only person in the vehicle and was transferred to the hospital for assessment and is recovering at home.
No guests were on board or involved in the incident.
The investigation has been handed over to Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety department.
“The safety and well-being of our team members and guests is fundamental to how we operate,” said Stuart Back, Pursuit’s Canadian chief operating officer.
“We are gathering facts about the incident and carefully reviewing the circumstances with the applicable authorities. We will not speculate about the cause while that work is underway.”
Pursuit cancelled its tours until Thursday.
Three people died and 14 were seriously injured in a 2020 crash when an Ice Explorer lost control and rolled in what a judge later determined to be caused by a “catastrophic braking issue.”
