Lego tower turning heads in SW Calgary neighbourhood

A towering seven‑metre Lego installation wrapped around a streetlight in Calgary’s southwest is stopping residents in their tracks.

Zach Lowe, who built the structure with his children in the community of Killarney, says the project started small and quickly escalated.

“Went outside with the kids and they wanted to make Lego and it started little, and kind of got out of hand,” he said.

Children inspecting the display have been quick to point out its quirks. One laughed while spotting an item tucked inside the structure:

“It’s a toilet… it’s funny.”

Others say the creation has already become a local destination.

“I’m proud of it,” one resident said. “In fact, I have friends coming from out of town this weekend…13‑year‑old boy who’s Lego crazy… one of our first stops will be this post for sure.”

Lowe gestures to one of the many characters attached to the pole.

“We have Jerry, doin’ some standup,” he said.

After eight hours of construction and 124,000 Lego pieces, the installation is also raising questions about public safety and whether it belongs on City property.

Calgary Bylaw Services has not approached Lowe and offered a light‑hearted explanation in a statement to CityNews.

“Everything is awesome! We’re impressed by the creativity and effort behind the Lego tower and the smiles it’s brought to the neighborhood,” reads the statement. “We’re not looking to take enforcement action as long as it’s removed within the roughly one‑month timeframe as indicated by the creator.”

The city added that the only exception would be if crews need access to the streetlight for maintenance or repairs before then.

Neighbours say the display poses no risk.

“I don’t think this is a hazard in any way,” said one person. “It’s no more of a hazard than a sign that we see on the side of the street.”

Until city officials piece together any community concerns, the towering Lego landmark remains standing.
