New Airdrie health centre to bring urgent care, birthing and surgical services

A new health centre planned just north of Calgary will bring urgent care, maternal services, and surgical capacity together in one location.
The Alberta government announced it is partnering with Covenant Health on a project expected to open in 2031 to expand access to key health services for the City of Airdrie and surrounding communities.
The Airdrie Covenant Health Centre will include an Urgent Care and Birthing Centre, and a Primary, Surgical and Ambulatory Care Centre. The goal is to give residents a single location for non‑life‑threatening urgent care, maternal care, and a range of outpatient and surgical services.
“A city this size, growing this fast, deserves care that’s built for who they are, not whatever capacity happens to be left over next door,” says Hospitals Minister Adriana LaGrange.
Airdrie’s population has climbed from about 30,000 to more than 90,000 over the past two decades, and officials say the new centre is designed to help health services keep pace with that growth.
“his is something that is going to serve not just Airdrie, but this whole area of the province for many years to come, so it’s a win for all of us,” said the city’s mayor Heather Spearman.
The Urgent Care and Birthing Centre is expected to support roughly 1,000 births and 30,000 urgent care visits each year. The attached surgical and ambulatory centre will add capacity for about 10,000 surgical procedures annually.
The Albert Union of Public Employees (AUPE) cautioned the move, saying in part, “it’s worrisome that there was no mention of staffing in the news release. Albertans deserve to know the government’s plan to recruit and retain the workers needed to deliver these vital services.”
Alberta’s government will fund construction and land purchase for the urgent care and birthing facility. Covenant Health will develop the surgical and ambulatory centre and work with provincial ministries to plan services based on current and future demand.
The project is the first phase of the broader Covenant Wellness Community, which aims to bring multiple health and wellness services together in one place.
