Calgary is getting tougher on illegal fireworks use.

Calgary City Council in a 13-1 vote passing stricter penalties that include the fine for selling fireworks increasing from $750 to $3000, the penalty for discharging fireworks without a permit going up from $500 to $1,000.

It also includes the addition of a new offence for openly displaying a firework in a public place with a penalty of $1,000.

“Hopefully administration can this year proactively look after the issues that were highlighted to them through 311 calls, or 9-1-1 calls,” said Coun. Raj Dhaliwal “I’ve been told there’s a plan to work with community organizations, but also with bylaw and CPS of more of a coordinated approach.”

Calgary saw 183 fireworks-related service requests to 311 between 2023 and 2025.

The City says they will support community-led celebrations with permits, grants and planning help, and they have created a coordinated safety plan involving emergency services for peak periods beginning in late 2026.
