What’s open and closed in Calgary on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is on Monday, giving Calgarians a chance to enjoy a long weekend with family, food and a variety of free activities across the city.

Whether you’re looking for something to do, planning to get around town, or wondering what’s open and closed, here’s what to expect on Thanksgiving Monday.

Attractions

  • Calgary Zoo/Wilder Institute — Open regular hours, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • TELUS Spark Science Centre — Open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Heritage Park Historical Village — Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving Monday.

Government & Public Services

Banks — Closed Monday.

Canada Post — No mail collection or delivery on Thanksgiving Day. Privately operated postal outlets may be open according to host business hours.

Government offices — Federal, provincial and municipal offices closed.

Landfills & Eco Centres

All City of Calgary landfills will be open on Labour Day under regular schedules.

Parking

On-street ParkPlus zones — Free on Monday.
Calgary Parking parkades and surface lots — Weekend rates apply.
Partner lots (Calgary Zoo, TELUS Spark, Heritage Park and Stampede Park) — Regular rates remain in effect.
Calgary Parking Contact Centre and Impound Lot — Closed Monday.

Recreation Facilities & Programs

The following City facilities will be closed Monday, except for the free skating and swimming opportunities:

  • All arenas
  • Indoor pools and fitness centres
  • Maxwell Soccer Centre
  • North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre
  • Wildflower Arts Centre
  • Animal Services Centre
  • Registered programs and most swimming lessons will not run Monday.
  • Drop-in programs will not be offered.

Golf Courses

City golf courses and driving ranges will be open throughout the Thanksgiving weekend. Tee times can be booked online.
Thanksgiving Monday is the final day of the season for golf at Lakeview and McCall Lake.

Skating

Free ice skating will be offered on Thanksgiving Monday at four City arenas. Family skate times are 1 to 2:15 p.m. and 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. at:

  • Shouldice Arena (1515 Home Rd. N.W.)
  • Stu Peppard Arena (5300 19 St. S.W.)
  • Murray Copot Arena (6727 Centre St. N.W.)
  • Rose Kohn/Jimmie Condon Arena (502 Heritage Dr. S.W.)

Swimming

Free family swimming will also be offered from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and 3 to 4:30 p.m. at:

  • Glenmore Aquatic Centre (5330 19 St. S.W.)
  • Thornhill Aquatic & Recreation Centre (6715 Centre St. N.W.)

Shopping

Most major retailers will be open, though some will operate with holiday hours.

Malls

  • CF Chinook Centre: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • CF Market Mall: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Southcentre Mall: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Sunridge Mall: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • The Core: Noon to 5 p.m.

Transit

Calgary Transit will operate buses, CTrains and On Demand services on a Sunday-level schedule on Thanksgiving Monday.

The Red Line will be closed between Chinook and Heritage stations from Saturday through Monday. Shuttle buses will replace train service between the two stations while crews complete maintenance and construction projects. Regular service is expected to resume Tuesday.
