Employees at a southeast Calgary office building had an unexpected encounter Tuesday morning when a young bull moose smashed through a glass window and wandered into the lobby.

The animal broke through a window at Midpark Court, startling workers inside before making its way through the building’s hallways.

Building manager Grant Thomas-Nelson said he rushed upstairs after hearing the commotion.

“Sure enough, I came running up and saw the window broken, and we saw the moose running up and down this hallway, and it was quite shocking to say the least,” he said.

As staff tried to determine what had happened, Amy Wilson, a psychologist who works in the building, went to investigate the noise.

“It kind of sounded like somebody had maybe dropped a bunch of glasses or the mirror had fallen off or something, so I went out to check and, yeah, a few people were upstairs there and said there’s a moose in here. And there he was,” she said.

Wilson said she watched the ordeal from upstairs while staff below worked to give the animal space and find a way to guide it out of the building.

“We started basically, frantically trying to get the doors open and I bolted around the backside of the building there to try and shoo him out,” Thomas-Nelson said. “All the other guys just sort of stood back and gave him some room to move there.”

However, the moose did not leave through the front doors. Instead, it retraced its steps and exited through the same shattered opening it had entered, passing back through the broken glass.

“He was bleeding a little, so, I hope he had a better day after that,” Wilson said with a laugh.

In a statement, Alberta Fish and Wildlife confirmed that officers successfully tracked the animal down shortly after the incident.

“Officers were able to locate the moose outside nearby and safely immobilize the animal. The moose was then relocated to a suitable wildlife habitat west of Water Valley. Aside from minor cuts sustained from the broken glass, the animal had no other apparent injuries,” the agency said.

Building management estimates the damage caused by the incident will cost thousands of dollars to repair.
