Terrorism offence: Alberta teen accused of corresponding online with ISIS

A 17-year-old has been arrested for a terrorism-related offence, accused of corresponding online with members of ISIS.

Authorities say a 17-year-old from Alberta was arrested last week in connection with a terrorism-related offence.

The teenager, who cannot be named, is accused of corresponding online with people affiliated with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

The RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) says it began investigating the teen in February. An arrest was made on Oct. 26.

Police say the RCMP has initiated proceedings against the youth “by way of a terrorism peace bond” – a preventive court order used when an individual is suspected of possibly committing a terrorism offence.

The teenager was released with conditions and is scheduled to appear at the Fort McMurray Provincial Court on Tuesday.

The criminal investigation is ongoing.

Earlier this fall, in an unrelated matter, a teenager from Lethbridge was charged with multiple terrorism offences in connection with their alleged involvement with the 764 network — a terrorist entity.
