A man accused of human trafficking offences in Calgary is facing new charges after investigators alleged he attempted to interfere with court proceedings by contacting victims in the case.
ALERT says 33-year-old Neylson Benoit-Ancion was rearrested on Oct. 19 and charged with failure to comply with release conditions and obstruction of justice.
According to investigators, he allegedly tried to coerce some of his previous victims into not cooperating with court proceedings.
Benoit-Ancion was initially charged by ALERT with human trafficking-related offences in March.
“Victim safety and well-being has always been at the forefront of our investigation. These new charges demonstrate our commitment to justice and hopefully show other victims that they are safe to come forward,” ALERT Staff Sgt. Matt Pumphrey said in a statement.
ALERT says several alleged victims have been identified, but investigators believe there may be additional victims elsewhere in Canada.
The investigation extended beyond Calgary and involved police in Quebec.
Benoit-Ancion remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 7.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact local police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Survivors of human trafficking can access support by calling 211.
