Mayor defends pride flag at City Hall

Calgary’s Mayor tweets “the haters are outnumbered 20 to 1”.
Naheed Nenshi is referring to those who oppose flying the pride flag at City Hall during the Olympics.
Nenshi believes the flag shows support for Canada’s gay athletes, competing in Sochi.
Since it was raised on Friday, the mayor has seen tweets directed at him, challenging the decision.
Some twitter users have questioned why this particular cause is receiving so much attention, while other social issues around the world, aren’t as forefront.
But, political science professor at Mount Royal University, Keith Brownsey, believes flying the rainbow coloured flag is a good idea.
“It shows that Calgary is a diverse place, we’re inclusive, and my God, we don’t have Rob Ford as mayor,” said Brownsey.
Unlike Calgary, Toronto’s mayor doesn’t want the pride flag to fly at his city hall.
Nenshi also faced questions about whether politics should mix with cheering on our athletes.
“Those people are at best, fools,” said Brownsey. “We have nations, we have medal tallies amongst various countries; of course it’s about politics!”
The pride flag is expected to fly at Calgary City Hall until the end of the Olympics.
