Confusion, overlap, redundancies in Alberta’s continuing care

Alberta’s health watchdog says there’s confusion, duplication, and questions over who’s accountable for what in the continuing care system.

The Health Quality Council of Alberta, in a new report, says the province needs to clarify roles on quality management and safety supervision, and make clear the requirements for accreditation.

It also says the province needs to standardize how it gets feedback from clients, noting that the system currently struggles with multiple surveys and questionnaires.

Alberta Health Services was created six years ago to streamline and standardize health services provincewide to save money and eradicate administrative overlap.

In a separate report, the council also says that those who need the care should have some degree of choice in determining the option that’s best for them.

Continuing care encompasses a range of support, from having caregivers come to one’s home to full-time care in a stand-alone facility.
