Rain prompts advisories and watches

Stay off the Elbow River!

That’s the warning from Brian McAsey with the Calgary Fire Department.

He tells 660News even though the river may look calm, people can easily be swept away.

“That water is cold, it’s moving, it’s a dangerous circumstance and the river, which is usually quite mild, of course is now going to be very different,” says McAsey.

A rainfall warning continues to be in effect for the city of Calgary, as well as many areas south and west of the city.

As of 2 p.m. Thursday, Canada Olympic Park had seen nearly 23 millimetres of rain.

Calgary is expected to get another 30 mm of rain overnight with another 15 to 20 mm on Friday.

A total of 15 rivers and creeks are under either a streamflow advisory or watch.

Carrie Sancartier with Alberta Environment tells 660News the Highwood River, Fish Creek, Three Point Creek and the Sheep River are all under a high streamflow advisory and things get worse in the southwestern part of the province.

“We have put in place a flood watch for the Crowsnest River and what this indicates is that the levels have been rising and we’re approaching bank full,” says Sancartier.

She adds the status of water levels have three ratings, advisory, watch and warning with advisories being the least dangerous.
