The global war on drugs is lost

The Global Commission on Drug Policy says a new strategy to combat drug use is needed.
The 19-member panel, which includes the Greek Prime Minister, George Papandreou and former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, recommends the legalization of cannabis, along with the decriminalization of other drugs.
A renewed focus on preventing drug abuse and treating non-violent addicts was also part of the commission’s report.
The commission advised governments to focus on organized crime and drug traffickers and to look at alternative sentencing for first time and small scale drug dealers.
