CBE reacts to salary increases

The Calgary Board of Education says it will have to dip into its reserve fund to pay out teachers’ salaries this year.

An arbitrator’s ruling made public on Wednesday will add roughly $100 million in  salary increases over three years to teachers across the province.

Pat Cochrane, board chair of the CBE, tells 660News the difference will cost them $5.7 million right now, but they will be watching Tuesday’s budget very closely.

She says the CBE hopes the provincial government will cover the cost of the difference in what school boards were funded for in salaries and what the arbitration decision amounts to.

Under the old formula, teachers would have got a 4.8 per cent raise, but under the new formula the wage hike works out to almost six per cent.
